During our last week cruising down the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, we visited:
Sheboygan, where we went out to dinner at the yacht club with two couples who are just starting their loop and also, once again, had great Mexican food in Wisconsin;
Port Washington, which is home of the Duluth Trading Company, was a great town. We wished we were there longer than a day. Darn wind/waves impacting our travel plans! We were there on Sunday of Labor Day weekend and the Marina held a “holiday“ boat parade since their boats will all be in winter storage when the holiday season arrives. It was kind of funny to see boats decked out with a snowman and other holiday items in September. Lots of people came out to enjoy the boat parade even as it lightly rained.
Milwaukee, which is the second largest city on Lake Michigan, behind Chicago. It was a fun city to walk around. Dave braved getting his hair cut at a Supercuts (sorry Dennis). I think it looks good!
Kenosha, which was a quick overnight stop, however the boat next to us was a 48’ 1969 wooden Pacemaker. My dad had a 36’ Pacemaker which we named our boat after. I forgot to take a picture of the boat. Darn it! We had a great time chatting with the boat owner who use to run a ferry between islands on Lake Erie.
And finally, we arrived in Chicago. After a 6-hour cruise from Kenosha, we docked and then off to dinner at The Purple Pig. I had eaten at The Purple Pig with Patty and Lisa on one of our annual girl trips and remembered how great it was. It did not disappoint. The restaurant definitely ranks as one of the best meals we have had on the loop and I would rate it right up there the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park, NY. Of course, we also enjoyed Chicago deep dish pizza at Giordano’s after an informative Architectural River Cruise. The weather was picture perfect, with the clouds reflecting on the skyscrapers.
And, a big thank you to DeeDee (Murphy’s buddy) on War Eagle, letting us know about a dog park just a short walk from the marina. Murphy had several energetic play times at the park and thought the drinking fountain was his personal pool.
We are now leaving the Great Lakes and moving into what is referred to as the “river system”. We first travel down the Illinois River to the Mississippi River to the Ohio River and more. Stay tuned for next week’s update as we begin our travels on the river system, which will eventually drop us out in the Gulf of Mexico by Mobile, Alabama in November.
Fun Fact: Distanced traveled to Chicago: 3,354 miles in 174 days, stopping at 104 unique locations
Thanks for following along on our adventure,
Brenda with Captain Dave, and the dog park tired Murphy.
