This past week we departed Ashtabula, OH and headed for Geneva-on-the-Lake State Park, located… wait for it…yep, you got it, in Geneva-on-the-Lake (GOTL). This historic harbor town is open year-round, with an amusement type atmosphere, and boasts it is home of American’s oldest continuous operating miniature golf course (from early 1920’s). Unfortunately, it lightly rained most of the day (plus we were in town with Murphy), so we weren’t able to play miniature golf. We did enjoy a great meal in town (at Ruff Life on the Lake), the best donuts we’ve had on the loop, really good local red wine, trails to explore, and the best part…a dog friendly beach for Murphy. Of course, Murphy already beat me to blogging about the great time he had.
After GOTL, we stopped at Cleveland, touring the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We had 16 looper boats in the marina one day and we enjoyed a tasty Mexican dinner with 3 other looper couples. Next, we headed to the sailing/boating community of Vermilion, OH. They have over 3,000 registered boats with a population of 10,934. Pretty high ratio! The day we visited there was a national sailing regatta taking place which was great fun to watch. This was another great small town to walk around, complete with a soda fountain for Dave to enjoy a chocolate milkshake (and me a root beer float).
Our next stop recommended was Cedar Point, right outside of Sandusky, OH. Cedar Point is known for its “Amazement Park” compete with 18 roller coasters and a waterpark. Since I now have a propensity to get vertigo, we opted not to experience the thrills and scream along with everyone else in the park. However, we met 2 more looper couples and enjoyed a BBQ dinner together our last night there.
Above I mentioned there were 16 looper boats in Cleveland. The large majority of loopers are on an App which is called “Nebo”. Through this app you can see where your new friends are and it also records our time of travel and distance each day. If interested, you can download the Nebo app to your smart phone and just search for “Slo Pace”. It will pop up where we are currently. All loopers have an AGLCA logo on their dot so we know who are fellow loopers are. If you click on the dot, it pulls up boat information and if underway, it gives our current speed. If you zoom out on the map, you can see all the looper boats as they are making their way around the Great Loop. I’ll attached a few screen shots. It’s a great App for us to keep in touch with one another (and it also has a message and photo option).
Our next stop will be a bit of a slower pace, it’s Kelly’s Island, just about 10 miles across the lake from Sandusky, OH.
Thanks for joining along on our adventure. Till next update….
