This week we continued to explore the U.P. – the upper peninsula of Michigan, its northern shoreline on Lake Superior. There is gorgeous scenery everywhere you look. We hiked in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Park with over 90 waterfalls – all the water heading towards Lake Superior. We also noticed many ski resorts as we are driving around. I could not imagine living here year-round. The blustery north wind coming off Lake Superior would be quite cold. Brrrr. These Yoopers are a tough bunch!
We continued to head east to visit the Pictured Rocks National Seashore. It’s known for….yep, rocks. Actually, the “rocks” are a 15-mile shoreline with sandstone cliffs. The best way to see the shoreline is from the water (lots of tours available) or from a scenic overlook at Miner’s Castle, which we hiked to. Of course, more gorgeous waterfalls throughout
For our cycling friends, there are hundreds of miles of mostly paved bike trails. Michigan has done a great job to provide great trails for cyclists. One day, I wore a Slovenia cycling jersey to support Tadej Pogačar in his quest for a 3rd Tour de France title.
You can’t forget to get a U.P. pastie when in the U.P. It is pastry dough filled with various ingredients usually beef, potato, and onion. Very Yummy! I could see how these would be great on a cold winter day.
If it’s Friday on the Great Lakes, it’s time to enjoy a Fish Fry. Nearby Mt Shasta log cabin restaurant, opened in 1939, looked like a fun choice. The restaurant is known for being featured in the 1959 Jimmy Stewart movie, 7-time Oscar nominated “Anatomy of a Murder”. The restaurant even has a piano played by Duke Ellington in the movie. Fun spot for a Friday fish fry.
Below are a few fun pictures taken during this week. Included is a picture of where the U.P. is in relation to lower Michigan. We started our trip in the western UP and are now in the center We will end in the very eastern tip.
Dave and I greatly appreciate you following along on this year’s RV adventure. Till next Sunday…

Like I said on your IG post, it was fifty years ago, that I was there. Amazing how fast the time goes by.
Looks like a lot of fun! Give Murphy and Dave a hug for me! And keep a fly swatter handy for the extra large mosquitos!
