Dave and I first stopped at Geneva-on-the-Lake (GOTL) during the Great Loop two years ago. Located on the bank of Lake Erie, GOTL began as a summer resort in the late 1800’s, with an amusement park type atmosphere. Some of the original stores are still there, including our favorite, Madsen Donuts, opening in 1938. One morning Murphy and I walked to the beach for his morning swim, then into town (a 3-mile walk). We smelled freshly made donuts, so I texted Dave and asked if he would pick us up. I did not want to walk 3 miles back to the RV with freshly made donuts. They would have never lasted!
Mini golf anyone? GOTL has the oldest continuously operating mini golf course in the United States, established in 1924. Dave humored me and we played a round. I even got a hole-in-one! We also had a great meal at “Ruff Life on the Lake” a very dog friendly eatery (dratz….I forgot to take a picture of the patio area).
On our way to our campground, we drove along the shore of Lake Erie. I could not believe the miles and miles of vineyards that we passed. Little did I know that Ohio has its own wine country, with over 320 wineries. There was a list of those in our area that were dog friendly, so the three of us set off to enjoy an afternoon wine tasting (well, Murphy enjoyed fine water). Our trip was cut short due to incoming storms, along with a tornado watch (yikes!), but we did get to two wineries. The second winery, Grand River Cellars, had good wines and GREAT food. We ordered a Bruschetta for something to munch on and it was the best I have every had. The tomato, onion and herb spread on freshly toasted bread drizzled with balsamic vinegar was scrumptious. And then the dark chocolate cake tasted like See’s truffles. I didn’t mind leaving our winery tour after that stop. I don’t think the others could top it. Although Dave bought me a bottle of Pinot Grigio I really liked, Napa Valley wineries have nothing to worry about in wine competitions.
When Dave planned our route for this summer’s adventure, we usually were by rail trail bike routes. This stop was no different. We enjoyed several days of riding the Western Reserve Greenway Trail.
When not out exploring, we enjoyed a beautiful campsite, surrounded by woods. Oh, and Murphy did swim in his 5th Great Lake at this stop. He was so excited, he already sent out his own blog post about it. I hope you had a chance to read it.
One morning, while Murphy was enjoying his daily swim, he spied Sass, a 12-week old Chocolate Lab puppy. He even abandoned his stick (already thrown out for him) to greet her. Murphy and Sass played on the grass near the beach and had a great time.
Summer in Ohio rocks Brenda, In no rush to head south Dave, the “All 5 Great Lakes” swimmer Murphy.
Wow, you three sure are enjoying life out there on the road. So many cool experiences. Although, I think Murphy has it the best. (Great post Murphy!)
Small world, we also enjoyed a meal at Ruff Life with Loren, Lisa and trusty pup Piper. Fun spot!
So much fun! We really enjoyed the wineries of Ohio and Michigan. Love the list you found for pups. I need a winery dog! Congrats to Master Swimmer Murphy!
