Slo Pace: So long, Erie Canal….

This past week ended with a great treat – a trip to Niagara Falls.  Although many shared that in their opinion the view from the Canadian side is much better, we still greatly enjoyed the experience.

Earlier in the week, I had the pleasure of hanging out at the Village of Fairport for several days.  Dave made a quick trip to Florida for a few appointments, one of which was a haircut.  Really?  He couldn’t go to a barber shop along our route?  Dennis has been cutting his hair for the last 21 years, so he’s a bit attached to Dennis’s shears and styling prowess, so why not get a hair cut when in the area.

Knowing Dave had appointments in Florida on June 29th, earlier in the month we estimated we would be somewhere along the Erie Canal when he needed to fly back to Florida.   Looking ahead, we thought either Rochester or Buffalo would be our best bet for airports for Dave.  AGLCA (the looper association) have Harbor Hosts, who live in an area along the route.  I reached out to two Harbor Hosts and both were incredibly helpful in determining what our typical travel time would be along the Erie Canal, and most importantly, what would be a good location for Murphy and me to hang out while Dave was gone for 3 days.  It was suggested we tie up along the wall in the Village of Fairport, as the Rochester airport was only about a 20-minute drive. They nailed it!

Fairport was a delightful small town and Bryan and Leslie Hunter, Harbor Hosts, were superb.  They took us out for ice cream on our first night, gave Dave a ride to the airport, and Bryan insisted Leslie and I have a girl’s trip to Wegman’s for the “experience”.   Laughing inside, I thought, why do I need to “experience” a grocery store.  Well, now I know.  I have never been speechless after entering a grocery store, but I now have.  I will include a picture of the produce section only to give you an idea of the expansiveness.  Seriously, it was larger than most big box stores with rows and rows of everything possible you could want in a grocery store and more.  Wegman’s on-site bakery, deli, and pastry shops were outstanding.  And then to top it off, after we departed the store, a policeman, on top of a horse, was crossing the street (of course when the walk sign appeared).  I love small towns!!!  Leslie, also took me for a tour to see the Upper Falls in Rochester and several local sights.  I can easily understand how she and Bryan had made the Village of Fairport their home for the last 30 years.  Their hospitality, as well as the dock masters along the wall, made me feel right at home.

We have departed the Erie Canal, visited Niagara Falls and now are in Buffalo for the 4th of July.  And, what must you have while visiting Buffalo?  Wings of course!

Next, we begin exploring Lake Erie and its lakeside towns and cities.  One stop we are looking forward to is Cleveland, Ohio and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Thanks for joining along on our adventure.

I was going tease Dave with “What haircut?”, but actually it looked pretty good. -Probably thinking ” I don’t know when the next one will be ;-)”
Tell Murph’ the fireworks are only once a year (well maybe twice).
